It has been a few month since news of the Covid-19 pandemic started filtering through the media and making its way into our conscious thoughts. Particularly around the impact it would have on our country, the strains on resources, industry and of course our national care services. There were also moments of “oh crap… what about the business that we have worked so hard to build”, but in reality compared to the health impacts on our population and populations around the world, these thoughts were very much diminished.
That said, 2020 should have been a great year for Double-Barrelled. We’d just been named as one of Craft Beer Channel’s “breweries to watch of 2020” (whooop!) we’d gotten into a rhythm with our brewing and were about to push the button on two new double sized tanks, ready for a summer full of beer festivals, a packed taproom schedule and bustling pubs pulling pints of Parka.
Then suddenly we had no business and no trade.
An overnight change to our market, the good fortune to have been quietly working on a webshop in the background, and with many thanks to the support of our incredible customers we are brewing again. Just about keeping the business running in some, albeit reduced capacity, all helping to ensure DB remains in some form for the future.
And whilst we will still have to ditch a whole bunch of already kegged beer, and will most certainly lose money, the weeks that have followed have given us far more perspective on the bigger picture.
People have described us as “key workers”. Well we aren’t key workers in our eyes, we are just getting people some nice beer to help them through this weird time. And if that helps them, then great, because it sure helps us!
We can do this safely from the comfort of a 2M socially distanced delivery drop or passing to a courier to do the delivery for us. We can just about manage with a much reduced team (Luci & Mike, with some infrequent assistance for packaging and delivery), without worrying about putting our team members at risk.
This is very different from the key worker who is going into work every day, coming into contact with hundreds of people, be that an operator in a warehouse, now working ridiculous hours to keep goods moving, a teacher looking after a reduced number of keyworkers children, a refuse worker collecting household waste, a supermarket operative or the teams in care homes doing their best to keep their residents safe and well.
On top of those amazing people, you have hundreds of thousands of NHS & support staff who are putting their lives on the line every single hour of the day to keep us safe, to try and keep our family and friends alive.
So yeah, we don’t really feel like key workers and are simply grateful to still be busy and still able to do what we love; making beer.
So, in a little attempt to give back somehow, we decided to make this next release a “thank you” beer.
Like many of you, we choose to stand outside our houses on Thursday evenings to thank the NHS, Key & Care workers up and down the country. And whilst we do this, are very much aware that in reality this action cannot, and will not ever go far enough to be an appropriate level of thanks to those magnificent people it is aimed at.
We also recognise that on an individual level we are incapable of making any meaningful change to so many years of cuts to the NHS. But, from what we have gathered for those on the front line, the applause and the rainbows and the acknowledgement with gratitude helps in some small way. So we can attempt to help show more recognition and thanks, and offer something through Double-Barrelled with the help of our incredible customers.
We have named this new beer “Applause” – a table beer, which has been specifically designed as a thank you to the NHS, care & key workers during this scary and world changing pandemic.
For every single can of Applause sold, we will donate £1 to the NHS Charities Together.
We’d love for you to buy this beer for yourself to enjoy, or alternatively send it to a keyworking, NHS or care friend or family member you may have, who you’d love to send a thank you to.
Applause is a light, easy drinking 3.2% Table Beer. It has been dry hopped with Citra & Mandarina Bavaria, giving delicate citrus notes of mandarins and subtle grapefruit. It’s soft, suitable for vegans and with a low ABV you can’t go too wrong having a few in the sunshine.
Applause is a limited edition beer, so when it’s gone, it’s gone!
Why the NHS charities together?
COVID-19 has undoubtedly shone a light on the NHS Charities Together, but the work and support offered goes way further than this pandemic we find ourselves living through.
They support hospital trusts all across the country (from our local the Royal Berkshire to incredible children’s hospital, Great Ormond Street) .
Their main focus generally is on funding research and innovation, improving equipment and improving the hospital environment for patients. The funds they receive do NOT go towards every day running costs of the NHS, like paying staff etc.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have also been supporting providing additional PPE, much needed breakout space for staff & volunteers, electronic tablets for staff & patients to keep in contact with their loved ones and counselling support to protect mental health, at what must be an incredibly challenging time.
Whether it be for cancer treatment, maternity care, A&E bumps or now COVID care, the NHS has touched most of our lives, so it’s great to be able to support in some way, when it will be stretched more than ever.
I would like to send this as a gift to my keyworking friend – can I include a gift note?
Great! Please put a note in the “order comments” section that this is a gift and we won’t include the receipt. If you want to put a note – pop that in there too and we will hand write your note for you.
I work for the NHS – please can I get a discount?
Yes you may! If you are Blue Light Card Holder (applicable to NHS/Social Care/Emergency Services/Armed Forces) please send us an email from your work account or with your ID to email@example.com before placing your order and we will send you a unique 20% discount code!
This is applicable for all our beers.
Why £1 and not “all proceeds”?
As we will be selling this through differing channels (direct to consumers, through wholesale & direct to bottle shops) we want to make sure it is really clear & tangible what purchasing each can would provide to charity.
But to be transparent, based on our production levels, we will expect to donate over £4000 to the NHS Charities Together as a result of this one beer.
That means whether you buy a single can on our webshop or a case of 24 and get a discount or buy at your local indie beer shop, the donation will still remain £1 per can.
What are your current delivery lead times?
You can find more detailed information on our FAQs page, but we are back to 1-2 day turnarounds on nationwide deliveries, shipped Mon-Thurs and twice a week deliveries for local drops.
Are you still collecting food for food banks?
Yep, for all local deliveries we are happy to collect food which we will donate on a weekly basis to Readifood bank.
All our local delivery drivers work for DB so are well aware of the whole thing!
This can all be done without contact – just let us know that you have non-perishable items when you receive your delivery.
Applause will be launched on our webshop Wednesday the 6th of May at 4pm.
To be notified as soon as it’s online, sign up to our new email mailer for online shop beer releases and all DB goodness – sign up here
We are shipping to trade accounts so please drop us an email if you are interested in stocking Applause to firstname.lastname@example.org
We know we are low on DB cans at the moment, but next week should see the addition of Big Fruit Heist and Parka to the webshop & trade lists too!
We have plenty in tank and we won’t be leaving you hanging for too long!
Thanks as ever for your continued support.
