We landed in Adelaide high off our encounter with the Great White Sharks of Port Lincoln but also very excited to get back into the brewery visits and craft beer bar hopping, because Great White Sharks just aren’t cool enough.
We’d arranged to meet up with Big Shed Brewing Concern owner Craig, who took the time out of his busy day to show us around the brewery & tell us more about his business.
It became apparent very early on that we had met a man who was unbelievably passionate about craft beer and providing a local community with a place to sit and drink fantastic beers in a chilled, friendly and welcoming environment.
Talking through his inspiration was cool, as well as their beautiful creation and aforementioned beer in this blog – Golden Stout Time.
The idea of trying to make a beer that tastes just like “Golden Gaytime”, a classic Australia icecream, is what led to the creation of Golden Stout Time. Having tried both… the Big Shed team did a cracking job! It’s a delight!
Back to our visit… learning about how Big Shed came to be (homebrewing and the old ‘wouldn’t it be awesome if we did this full time…?’), how the local community have welcomed and championed them, hearing how many people came down to celebrate their birthday… it was great to hear Craig’s continued passion. It’s definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.
We stuck around for a few more drinks and very much enjoyed our time in the shed. They have now extended their range of wares to creating epic looking burgers to serve at their tap room.
After an evening enjoying Adelaide’s vibrant foodie scene, our second day started with the pre-arranged meeting & private tour at Pirate Life, where CEO Mick showed us around their impressive digs. With the three main protagonists hailing from Brewdog pedigree, this was always set to be an interesting visit and a marked difference from the guys at Big Shed. The scale of Pirate Life is significantly bigger, with a push for a much larger distribution network & small number of beers goes hand in hand with the larger scale.
This brewery means business.
Beer geeks & their dedication to consistency and quality is an understatement. But what one thing do beer geeks do well? Create great beer, which is why so many of their brews are in the top 10 Aus beers, less than 2 years after starting production.
Mick also mentioned that they were launching their range in the UK this week, so happy craft beer hunting for any of you out there looking for a sample of what these boys are capable of. We’re sure you’ll be able to get your hands on some tinnies near you soon. *We note that Pirate Life has now unsurprisingly sold to ABInbev.
Our final stop was Little Bang Brewery – fairly out of the way and a pretty small site but the bonus of having the place to ourselves was cool.
The bar staff were a laugh too and the beer was pretty good – special mention to the ‘Beard Fiction’ on tap that our bartender took great delight in explaining how it was so erotic it ‘gives him a chubby’. How lovely!
A delightful time in Adelaide, now for some more exploring!
