We love indie beer shops! A hub for beer lovers in the heart of our communities, run by a small but dedicated network of indie business owners, committed to sharing their passion, knowledge and service with all things beer. A lifeline to small breweries like Double-Barrelled, these shops have been the gateway to many in learning about craft beer and discovering the flourishing beer scene in the UK.

Indie Beer Shop Day was first celebrated in 2020 when during the height of the pandemic over 40 beer shops came together to release a special collaboration beer with our good friends at DonzokoIndie Graft. An imperial version of their Belgian Pale Ale Graft – a tribute to the hard work and commitment of independent businesses across the country.

Flash forward to 2021 and whilst it may not feel as if much has changed, the indie beer sector is thriving with new retailers opening in towns nationwide, bringing people together over a few beers. This year’s Indie Beer Shop Day UK celebrations have also taken a similar trajectory with over 100 beer shops taking part, and three official collaborations – one of which is our new IPA In My Neighbourhood. Joining us are Leith’s Pilot with their Tropical Sour Island of Independents and Abbeydale Brewery with Independence Dry Hopped Pale Ale.

We were delighted when we were approached to take part in the festivities, as a brewery we have such a strong bond with all the indie retailers we work with around the country. There are bottle shops who have championed us since we were fresh out of the garage, like Jen and Glenn at Dulwich’s Hop Burns & Black (who also specialise in hot sauce, how cool… or should we say hot, lol), Phill and Steph at Kentish Town’s Caps & Taps and Elliot and Libby from Hackney Downs’ All Good Beer – all helped by a shared love of drinking at great London beer venues and ultimately delicious independent beer.

These indie beer shops were our absolute “early adopters” taking the cans straight from our first canning run. Having the opportunity to have direct and honest feedback from some of the most respected figures in the beer trade has ultimately helped Double-Barrelled grow into the brewery it is today. Stocking beer from any new and unheard-of brewery is always a risk and we will always be grateful for their guidance, mentorship and friendship.

As we grew, we were joined by regular DB stockists across the country. In far flung places we have never had the chance to visit ourselves, but wanted to stock our beer – from Whitley Bay’s Nord Bottle Shop, and all the way down to the newcomers at Lauter: Bottle Shop and Brew Space in Falmouth.

Locally of course, we have the iconic Grumpy Goat, Anne-Marie and Charlie have been supplying Berkshire with the finest craft beer and cheese for 7 years, and who we have loved collaborating with on beers, along with relative newcomers with Dave and Naomi at Windsor’s A Hoppy Place and recent addition The Hive with Alex and Emma spreading the love in Crowthorne!

We love seeing how this network is aligned in their shared passion of championing the wonderful production of beer! Often locally owned their focus is to support their local economy, providing jobs and feeding money back into their local communities. Whilst we all know supermarkets can be convenient, nothing quite compares to spending your beer money with a specialist and independent retailer – online, in person or via local delivery.

Our contribution to this celebration, and reflecting the local vibes is In My Neighbourhood: a juicy and full bodied New Zealand style IPA. We have taken the opportunity to delve into the Southern Hemisphere hop harvest with both hands, using Nelson Sauvin, Rakau and Kotahu for notes of white wine, passionfruit and tropics. This is all paired with our house yeast and water treatment for a soft, moreish IPA that you will want to keep coming back to.

Culminating in a day of celebration on Saturday 17th July these beers are exclusively available from participating indie retailers! Find out where your nearest stockist is here and show some love and support to your local beer shop. We will also be joining beer writer and broadcaster Pete Brown on the 17th for a live tasting of In My Neighbourhood – we would love it if you could also join us in raising a glass to all of the Indie Beer Shops around the country too!
